Take the Puget Sound Community Checkup Survey
The Community Checkup looks at health care in the region to see if we are getting the right care based on our age, sex and health. Answer this brief survey based on information you find in the report to receive Live Well Challenge points.Register for the 2008 Puget Sound Heart Walk
Register now and walk later. The 2008 Puget Sound Heart will occur on October 4th.Choose a Healthy Commute
Saving at the gasoline pump isn’t the only benefit of taking public transportation. A green commute is also a healthy commute. Nearly 1/3 of transit users meet the Surgeon General’s recommendations for 30 minutes of physical activity per day just by walking to and from transit. If you are not already using transit try it out. Employees who are eligible for benefits can use their King County identification card to ride free on the Metro Transit, Sound Transit, Pierce Transit, and Community Transit bus systems as well as Sounder Commuter Rail and the Elliot Bay Water Taxi.
Already a transit user? Try to make your commute even more active. Get off the bus a stop or two early and walk the rest of the way or try biking.
Other ideas? Take a mini-vacation on Metro to local summer hotspots!
Create a Personal Health Record (PHR)
A PHR can help you understand and manage your medical information to improve your well-being and the quality of health care you receive. With a PHR you can view your medical record, get test results, and refill prescriptions. You can also share information with your doctor which can help reduce duplicate tests and allow you to receive faster, safer treatment in an emergency. In short, a PHR helps you play a more active role in your healthcare. To create your Personal Health Record:
- Aetna – Register or log in to Aetna Navgator
- Group Health – Register or log in to MyGroupHealth
“Know Your Numbers”
If you're trying to eat healthier foods and getting in a little more exercise, good for you! Now there's one more thing to do to assure a healthier life: know your numbers — not just your height and weight, but also your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels. If found early, high blood pressure, elevated LDL cholesterol and high blood glucose levels are all very treatable and can be controlled.
So find out and record your “numbers”. Then use an on-line tool to understand what they mean.
- Blood glucose
- Blood pressure (Tip: many pharmacies and grocery stores have self service blood pressure machines that you can use for free.)
- Body Mass Index
- Cholesterol
