Public Health Week Walks 2008 – A Great Success!

Employees earned a free pedometer during Public Health Week, April 7 - 11

King County employees stepped up and stepped out the week of April 7-11 to celebrate Public Health Week.  Over 250 groups representing every county department signed up to participate in walks and received pedometers to track their steps.  More than 1300 walkers registered and reported almost 4.2 million steps with more step counts coming in every day!  That equals about 2,050 miles, the equivalent of Seattle to Chicago!   Compared to driving, that much walking saves over $1,532.27 in gasoline and reduces carbon emissions by 107 lbs.  Additionally, walking burns about 100 calories per mile, which means that collectively county employees burned over 319,048 calories during Public Health Week!

Thank you for your participation!

The Benefits of Walking

Experts agree that 15 minutes of physical activity a day has a positive impact on health. Just some of the benefits of walking are:

  • Manage weight and lower blood pressure
  • More energy, better balance and stronger bones
  • Better sleep and mood
  • Fewer aches and pains
  • Reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke
  • Healthier heart and lungs
  • Reduce the risk for diabetes and some types of cancer
  • Reduce greenhouse gases when you replace a drive with a walk

Recent studies show that wearing a pedometer actually encourages more walking . . . So join your co-workers and get outside for a walk; celebrate your health and wear a pedometer.

For more than 12 years, the first full week of April has been celebrated as National Public Health Week. Each year since 1995, the public health community has focused on an issue that is important to improving the public's health. 2008's focus is "Climate Change — Our Health in Balance".

The King County Public Health Week celebration was brought to you by Health Matters, Public Health Seattle & King County, and Dept. of Natural Resources and Parks. Thank you for walking to improve your health and improve the health of our community.

*According to ethics guidelines, the pedometers remain property of King County, similar to other disposable equipment items.
